Gold Coast smoke alarm questions
What exactly does the law require?
Every Queensland home needs photoelectric smoke alarms (Australian Standard AS 3786-2014) that are interconnected, so when one sounds they all sound. They must be in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. Alarms must be hardwired to mains power or have a 10-year non-removable battery, and any alarm over 10 years old must be replaced.
When is the deadline?
Rental homes and homes being sold already have to comply. All other homes, including owner-occupied houses, townhouses and units, must comply by 1 January 2027.
Do I need an electrician?
If your current alarms are hardwired (240-volt), they must be replaced with hardwired alarms, and that work must be done by a licensed electrician. If your home only has battery alarms, you can replace them with interconnected alarms that have a 10-year non-removable battery, which you can install yourself. Many people still choose an electrician to make sure placement and interconnection are right.
How much does it cost?
As a rough guide, supplied and installed alarms cost about A$100 to A$250 each, so a typical 3 to 4 bedroom home might pay around A$400 to A$1,000. Your electrician will give you an exact quote.
Who will contact me?
